African Weapons and knives

African Weapons and knives are mostly crude affairs – spears, pangas, axes and the like. The tradition of knife making in modern times is practiced by knife makers in South Africa. The range of beautiful knives – hunting knives, dress knives, skinning knives and sheath knives is large. Handmade knives using Damascus steel and precious metals are very beautiful. Using African masks and African patterns some of these dress knives are very expensive. Most knife makers in South Africa do not practise their craft full time – with a limited market for custom made knives many of the knife makers are hobbyists – which does not take away from the beauty of these knives.

Weapons as artform - African Knob Kierie

Beautful handmade knobkerrie

Traditional African weapons include the knobkerrie – it may not be as stylish as a hunting knife – but is certainly effective as an African weapon. Whilst most Knob Kieries are crude wooden objects – some artists find great pleasure in turning the simple knobkerrie into a work of art. They make fantastic corporate gifts for anyone who is interested in beauty and art.
